Nature Kids Solano: Peregrines Hike, Castle Rock

Peregrines Hike, Castle Rock

Wednesday, May 31, 2017

Website: Castle Rock Regional Park

Location: 1700 Castle Rock road, Walnut Creek, CA

Fees: No parking fee. Restrooms available - about a  5-minute walk from lot. Wheelchair accessible.

About: Adjacent to Diablo Foothills is Castle Rock Recreation Area located in a scenic canyon along Pine Creek. The area is dominated by oak woodlands and prominent sandstone formations. Numerous activities are offered: swimming pool, volleyball, basketball, baseball, hiking, picnicking, birding and more.

+ We scheduled a docent-led Peregrines hike with volunteer and lead Anastasia Hobbet from Mt Diablo Interpretive Association. She was an awesome leader. The kids enjoyed learning about peregrines and an activity before we headed off to seek the nesting peregrines, as well as hearing tips about Castle Rock Park, its wildlife and native plants along the way. We will definitely schedule another hike in 2018. This particular walk is recommended for kids about 5 to 6 and up - due to the length of walk and focus needed since it was more of an educational hike. Plus, a lack of bathroom facilities (the only bathroom is near the start of hike) can be an issue for little ones. While not a strenuous walk, it was about one mile each way.
